Paper-I is used for shortlisting candidates for Paper-II. The final merit is determined on the basis of normalized Paper-II scores, subject to fulfillment of the other eligibility and selection requirements.

Separate merit lists are prepared for the relevant posts and disciplines, including Junior Engineer (Civil), Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant in IMD, and Junior Engineer (Telecom).

SSC JE Exam Pattern 2026

According to the SSC JE 2026 Exam Pattern, both Paper-I and Paper-II are conducted in Computer Based Examination mode.

The papers contain objective-type multiple-choice questions. Questions are available in Hindi and English.

Candidates must select their appropriate engineering discipline while completing the application. The technical questions in the examination will be based on the selected discipline.

SSC JE Paper 1 Exam Pattern 2026

Paper-I contains General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and a technical engineering section.

General Intelligence & Reasoning and General Awareness are compulsory for all candidates. The technical section is based on the discipline selected in the application form.

SSC JE Paper 1 Negative Marking

There is negative marking in Paper-I.

For every incorrect answer, 0.25 marks are deducted. Therefore, candidates should avoid unnecessary guessing when they are unsure about an answer.

Paper-I is qualifying in nature. Candidates are shortlisted category-wise for Paper-II on the basis of normalized Paper-I marks.

SSC JE Paper 2 Exam Pattern 2026

Paper-II focuses entirely on the candidate’s selected engineering or technical discipline.

Duration: 2 Hours

Candidates eligible for a scribe receive 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Each candidate is required to answer questions only from the discipline selected while submitting the application.

SSC JE Paper 2 Negative Marking

Paper-II also includes negative marking.

1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.

Candidates should carefully check the discipline selected in their application because it cannot be changed later for the examination.

Normalized Paper-II scores are considered for preparing the final merit list.

SSC JE Minimum Qualifying Marks 2026

SSC has prescribed minimum qualifying marks for Paper-I and Paper-II.

CategoryMinimum Qualifying Marks
UR30%
OBC/EWS25%
Other Categories20%

Merely securing minimum qualifying marks does not guarantee final selection. Candidates must also satisfy the applicable cut-off and other recruitment requirements.

Important Instructions for SSC JE Exam 2026

Candidates should be aware of several important examination rules.

The IS 456:2000 Code of Practice and Steam Table will be provided on the computer screen whenever required.

A Scientific Calculator will also be available on-screen during the examination. Candidates are not permitted to carry physical versions of these materials or calculators into the examination lab.

If an examination is held in multiple shifts, SSC applies its normalization procedure to candidates’ scores.

Electrical and Mechanical branches, as well as applicable IMD streams, may also be normalized against one another as specified by the Commission.

The technical questions for Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering are approximately at the Diploma in Engineering level.

Questions from Computer Science & IT, Electronics & Telecommunication, Physics, and Telecommunication are approximately at graduation level.

How to Prepare for SSC JE Exam 2026

Candidates should first become familiar with the complete SSC Junior Engineer Syllabus 2026 and divide topics according to their strengths and weaknesses.

Start with fundamental engineering concepts before moving to difficult numerical problems. Create short notes for formulas, definitions, important concepts, and frequently confused topics.

Reasoning and General Awareness should not be ignored because together they contribute 100 marks in Paper-I.

Previous-year questions and mock tests are also useful for understanding the level and style of questions. Since both papers have negative marking, candidates should work on accuracy along with speed.

For Paper-II, give maximum attention to the technical discipline because its normalized score determines final merit.
